Facts Table On tiritiri Matangi

Tiritiri Matangi Wildlife Sanctuary
On our trip to Tiritiri Matangi, we are going to encounter (meet) some new words.  Some of the words will be difficult (hard to say and spell)  while some words will be easy.  Look at some of the words below and search for their meanings:

Native
Existing in or belonging to one by nature.
Endemic
That something is only in one place not anywhere else.
Bio-security
Procedures or measures designed to protect the population against harmful biological substances.
Shellfish
An aquatic shelled mollusc or crustacean, especially one that is edible.
Embarking
Hop on a ship or aircraft.
Disembarking
Leave a ship, aircraft or train.
Handrail
A rail fixed to posts or a wall for people to hold onto for support.
Deck
A floor of a ship.
Ranger
A keeper of a park, forest or area of countryside.
Guide
A person that shows a way for others to get through.
Sanctuary
A nature reserve.
Wattle
A material for making fences or walls.
Pest
A harmful insect or other animal that attacks crops.
Stowaways
A person that stows away in a vehicle.
Predators
An animal that naturally preys on other animals.
Eradicated

Endangered
Seriously at the risk of extinction.                                    
Restored
Bring back or re-established.     
Habitat
Where something lives.    
Rare
Not happening very often.
